Crushing cars?

What happens to those blocks of crushed cars? I mean, as far as I can see, they include everything from tires to glass to plastic & several different metals. Are they melted down as is or is there some method for separating the different materials?

Reprocessed for the steel - on melting the other stuff floats out as slag.
