Failed attachments and posting

Earlier I tried to attach some pictures to a post I made. Attaching the first image failed (no useful error was given, but I'm assuming the file was too big) so I went and linked the pictures instead from my Flickr page. When I went to submit the post, I got the same error as before that the file attachment had failed. So I went to the attachment tab and tried to clear the field but nothing worked. It's not possible to manually overwrite the entry, you can only populate it from the 'browse' button so eventually I had to copy the text of my post, cancel the reply and start again.

1: Am I missing something really obvious or is there really no way to clear an attachment (failed or otherwise) from your post before you submit it?
2: What are the board limits for attachments? Would it be possible to summarise these in the attachment tab itself?
On two occasions I have been asked, "Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?" I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

I've upped the limit, it was 256k per attachment, now 5MB which is perhaps a little more realistic.
Max 20 attachments/images per post.

5 MB!? Why so high? It used to be 100 KB which was rarely a problem, but why a whole 5 MB!? That's a bit ridiculous....
High elevation is the best elevation - the higher, the better the view!

You can still post 100kb files if you wish, so what's the problem?
Technology and server capacity move on, why limit people for no reason?
