Don't feel too bad, Ed, because I never got a good answer in that thread - and still don't know how to do it ! The final suggestion (Google) looked promising but after going through more than a dozen of the hits listed, I finally gave up. So if you *DO* find out how, please let me know.

You can't do it natively in Windows. Certain applications allow you to program function keys but Explorer does not. You would need to use a separate macro program and then assign your text string to a function key through that. Some function keys are already used for various Explorer functions or have Windows standard behaviours - f1 is always help, f5 is refresh etc.

Here is a free macro program I haven't used it (or any program like it) so take it as an example not an endorsement.
On two occasions I have been asked, "Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?" I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.
