Terminator Particles?

In the well-known Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Terminator, a killer robot is sent back in time to eliminate the man who will eventually lead the resistance against the robot overlords. Some scientists are postulating that the Higgs Boson is doing much the same thing to prevent its discovery.

The LHC suffered another setback recently when, of all things, a passing bird dropped some bread onto an exposed part of the machinery causing it to overheat. Dr. Holger Nielsen of the Niels Bohr Institute and Dr. Masao Ninomiya of the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics have put forwards hypotheses that a 'backwards causation' is in effect and that the Higgs Boson is preventing its own discovery from the future.

On two occasions I have been asked, "Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?" I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

I started reading an article about their crazy idea a couple of weeks back. I must admit that I only got a little more than halfway through it before I gave up in disgust.

Anyone who can subscribe to that line of thinking should be ashamed to try and call themselves a scientist. That's a worst excuse than 'the Devil made me do it' or 'the dog ate my homework.'

Stranger things have already been shown to happen in quantum physics. Dr Nielsen is well known as one of the more unconventional thinkers in the field but he's certainly no charlatan.

Never called him a charlatan. But he and anyone else who subscribes to such magical ideas needs to step away for theoretical physics for a couple of days and do some real work instead. There's nothing wrong with a little speculation - but absolutely insane speculation is, well, almost insane. In fact, he needs to get out of the lab a while and breathe some fresh air.

You do realize, don't you, that the mildest acceptance of such gobbely-gook would provide an excuse for ANYTHING that didn't turn out as expected. "The future is preventing me from proving my theory!!!"

Absurd!! Might as well toss ALL science out the window.

I've heard it speculated that UFOs are not ETs but actually time travelers from the future. Maybe the H.B. has something to do with that Image

Yep, no doubt they are somehow related to quantum physics! (Pardon me while I die laughing.) :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Honestly - I think some of these theoretical physicists have spent too much time watching science fiction movies instead of sticking to serious science. (Either that or the fact that they really don't have enough work to do - honestly!)

And to realize that you and I are helping pay them through government grant money to come up with nonsense. Egad!!! :evil:

I mean no offense and certainly don't want to start an argument but the ideas of those theoretical physicists aren't any more far out (to me) than the premises of most religions. Image

No worries, Joel, no arguments here and no offense taken. But I do see a major difference in those two groups. Religion (most of them) are quite willing to say that you have to take what they say strictly by faith.

But science - ALL science, including theoretical physics - is supposed to have some foundation in fact that it's operating from. Some proven starting point that replicable. Things like THIS very stupid idea has no support in any form or fashion - it's nothing more than a brain passing flatulence. (I don't like using the commonly used particular word for that but needless to say it stinks!)
